The philosophy of my company and the theory behind this particular project is to produce work with limited traditional dance movement, while at the same time conveying text-driven, emotions, movement, and sensations. I aspire to expose the modern dance community to martial arts as a moving art form, rivaling traditional "dance" work. Dance, for me, is comprised of bodies manipulating the dynamics of traditional modern dance movement vocabulary, voice, breath, and ancient philosophies centralized in the true martial arts form. I intend to defy traditional definitions of dance with movement derived from harmonious connections between body and mind.
In the past decade, I have found my inspirations and life philosophies heavily based on the teachings of yoga and the martial arts form. I have been eagerly awaiting the chance to bring martial arts to the stage at its most artistic level. So often this art form is thought to be associated with self-defense or aerobic exercise, however, the martial arts also help develop mental clarity to balance out the physicality we tend to be more familiar with. This ancient art form involves developing and strengthening the individual mind and body, focusing more intently on mental development as the individual advances. In my advancing state of self-awareness I have realized that all art forms essentially require these sacred discipline elements: concentration, balance, control, strength, and flexibility. They are what guide me in my art and in my life (often they are one in the same).
